Quick Tips: Nipple Care after Top Surgery (DI)

  • FOLLOW ALL POST OP CARE INSTRUCTIONS YOUR SURGEON GIVES YOU. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR ARE UNSURE ABOUT ANYTHING, CONTACT YOUR SURGEON OR ASSIGNED NURSE.
  • When you are allowed to shower, avoid exposing your nipples to direct water spray. Try facing away from the shower head and allowing the water to gentle run down your chest.
  • Wash with baby soap or a gentle, fragrance free, hypoallergenic soap to avoid irritating your healing skin.
  • Don’t rub, scrub, pick or peel your nipples. Scabbing and translucent pus is natural and a good sign that your grafts (nipples are skin grafts taken from your original skin) are healing. At any sign of infection, contact your surgeon immediately.
  • Avoid shear friction to your nipples. Many, if not all, surgeons recommend you cover them with non stick gauze pads until they’re healed.
  • Be patience and don’t fret; while healing your nipples will go through different phases and at sometimes might look icky to you.
  • Try to sleep on your back for as long as possible to avoid excessive pressure and friction to your grafts.
  • Cigarette smoking has been shown to increase the chances of nipple graft loss, as well as cause other complications after surgery.
  • Avoid wearing bags with straps that cross over your nipple; when wearing a seat belt try adjusting the strap to avoid the same thing; granted you’re still safely secured.
  • Neosporin and Vaseline are common topicals surgeons recommend using. Usually Neosporin (essentially the same thing as Bacitracin) should be applied to for up to one week, then afterwards Vaseline several weeks and then as needed in order to prevent the skin from drying out. When applying these remember do not rub AT ALL, use q-tips to gently dab on until entire graft is covered.
